Shown below is a recap of the main focus points, in the last few minutes of a guitar lesson.

This great tune by composer Earl Hagen,

is a minor-key blues, with an interesting descending chromatic series of chords in

the turnaround section at the end of the form.  Clever use of ‘flat-five substitution’ chords,

changes the often heard One, Six, Two, Five  turnaround progression, into One, Flat-Three, Two, Flat-Two.

The numbers translate in this instance, to:

Gm-Em-Am-D (I-VI-II-V)   after flat-five substitutions, becomes

a really cool sounding Gm-Bb-A-Ab. (Bb is b5 of E, and Ab is b5 of D.)

Using the familiar 3rd fret position of pentatonic minor scale, we find all we need to improvise a melodic solo

that leads the ear through the changes.
